What is yoga?

Yoga, simply put, is moving through a series of poses, keeping our focus on the movements and breath. We get the physical benefit of greater strength, mobility, coordination and flexibility, but, perhaps more importantly, the mental benefit of mindfulness.

Yoga could also be described as Mindful Movement.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally. Jon Kabat-Zinn

Yoga is non-competitive movement linked to the breath. In yoga we can access this state of mindfulness more easily than say seated meditation, because we have movement and the breath to help us focus on the present moment, free from distraction.

This is particularly true for children, who love to move! The mental benefits of being mindful are rapidly being more fully understood, precisely why it's so important to offer children authentic yoga, for physical and mental benefit.

Additional Children's Mindfulness Classes

After practicing yoga for a little while children can more easily access a mindful relaxed state through connecting to the breath. That's when you might like to try guided breathing exercises, relaxations and meditations, like the following videos, to do in addition to the movement based classes.

Breathing for focus in children

This guided breathing exercise can be done at the desk, or seated or lying on the floor, and is a great way to re-focus your pupils and get them ready for the next task of the day!

A guided relaxation for calming children

Natural relaxation is usually the final element of a yoga class after mindfully moving connected to the breath. But sometimes when already physically or mental tired a guided relaxation is a great option for your class.

Great to do seated or lying down in the classroom or home, let Helen guided you through this short relaxation for children.

Meditation for positivity in children

We never really know what is going on in our pupil's lives, but it's amazing the power of the breath to increase our sense of wellbeing, calm and positivity.

Here Helen guides you through a short meditation for positivity designed specifically for children.

What next?

Even with a small amount of yoga with mindfulness you'll start to see a positive effect in your children!

But of course, the greatest benefit and transformation comes with consistency...
