Yoga for Bedtime
There are many reasons why a child might struggle getting to sleep, including stress and anxiety, in all it’s varying levels. We shouldn’t feel bad that our child, or pupils are feeling this way, and whilst we should try to understand the route of why they aren’t sleeping, we can also offer them tools to help deal with it.
Yoga can help reduce feelings and symptoms of stress and anxiety and help promote a good night’s sleep – and, as teachers and parents, we know that a good night’s sleep can make all the difference to a calm and productive day.
How does yoga help us to sleep?
Through the physical stretching that releases stored tension in the body.
Through deep breathing. Slow deep exhales especially, allowing us to access our parasympathetic nervous system, which is where we need to be to feel fully calm and relaxed, and able to sleep.
Try this 10 minute class with your child right before bedtime tonight. Get them into their pyjamas first and the class can be done right on the bed. Or, if you or they prefer, on the yoga mat or on the carpet next to the bed on the floor.
Don’t forget to tell me how it goes, in the comments below 🙂
All my best wishes, Helen
